COMMANDMENTS

What You Need To Know:

COMMANDMENTS begins with Seth enjoying a vacation with his newly pregnant wife. Suddenly, Seth’s wife drowns while swimming, and a series of disasters strike Seth’s life that can only be compared to the trials of Job. When Seth cries out to God for an answer, his house is destroyed by a tornado. Seth is forced to live with his deceased wife’s sister and her husband, a philandering reporter. In his ignorance of spiritual warfare and the wiles of the Adversary, it is clear to Seth that God doing this: but, for what reason? Seth is not the man of faith that Job was, so Seth decides to teach God a lesson by rebelling against God by breaking every one of the Ten Commandments.

COMMANDMENTS is a blasphemous film filled with vile language including unquotable mockeries of God and depicted adultery, idolatry, and violence. The technical quality is wasted on a story that promotes lies about God and man. The worst aspect of this movie is that it touches on the questions that fallible humans ask. Regrettably, the answers given in the movie fit only within a satanic worldview which requires that every Satanist breaks every one of God’s 10 Commandments. The filmmakers will give account to God for having made this film. You needn’t have to give an account for attending it.

More Detail:

The film COMMANDMENTS begins with Seth (Aidan Quinn) enjoying an oceanside vacation with his newly pregnant wife. Suddenly, for no explainable reason, Seth’s wife drowns while swimming, and a series of other disasters strike Seth’s life that can only be compared to the trials of Job in Scripture. When he cries out to God for an answer, his house is destroyed by a freak tornado.

Seth is forced to move in with his deceased wife’s sister Rachel (Courtney Cox) and her husband Harry, a philandering newspaper reporter played by Anthony LaPaglia. It is painfully clear to Seth, and the viewing audience, that God is responsible, if one does not believe in malevolent evil forces. Seth is not the man of faith that Job was. In fact, Seth decides to teach God a lesson by rebelling against God by breaking every one of the Ten Commandments.

Some of the Commandments are easy for Seth to break, but he sets new heights of blasphemy when he dishonors the Sabbath and his parents in the same act. At a Sabbath synagogue worship, he challenges the congregation with his conclusion that God is either unjust in what he allows, too weak to answer prayers, or both. This reviewer refuses to directly quote the actual words spoken in this and other instances. They would be too offensive to people with an accurate understanding of God’s lovely attributes.

There is nothing particularly surprising in this predictable film. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that Rachel will be Seth’s target for committing adultery, and murder will be the last commandment broken.

The most abominable aspect of this movie is that it touches on very real questions that fallible humans ask themselves at one time or another. “Where is God?” “Why is God allowing this?” “Why doesn’t God answer my prayers?” A wide audience will be able to identify with Seth, because most of them have felt the way he feels in this movie, but most will not identify with Seth’s rebellious defiance of the living God.

It is a pity that the writer/director Daniel Taplitz didn’t answer these questions truthfully. Consider the three possibilities he offers us: (1) God is allowing these horrible events to occur for no good reason; (2) He is a capricious, cruel God — the author of evil in order to bring about some good at the end; and, (3) God is not all knowing and all-powerful. None of these statements are true, responsible or wise. All of these statements fit within a perverse, satanic worldview. As Anton LaVey states in his evil book, SATANIC BIBLE, every Satanist is required to break all of God’s 10 Commandments to show his commitment to Satan.

The technical quality of this film is above average. The actors play their roles well, given the material. The director keeps the story moving quickly through its 85 minutes. The script presents ample opportunities to laugh, but at the expense of religious persons and through mockery of Almighty God. COMMANDMENTS presents a warped, satanic vision of God and man. Seth essentially casts himself in the role of the Almighty. The makers of this film would have us believe he gets away with it. How foolish! God is not mocked (Galatians 6:7).
