"No Man Is Good"
What You Need To Know:
Lindsey, a single mother with a six-year-old daughter, encounters Deeds when she takes his private parking space and engages in a vulgar shouting match. She next encounters Deeds when working as the night janitor while Deeds is simply working late. Deeds gradually learns how horrible Lindsey’s financial situation is and shows compassion. She winds up being the spark that snaps him out of the routine he has obediently been following and encourages him to pursue dreams of his own rather than the dreams of his parents. While Deeds concern and compassion is admirable the movie is flawed by foul language, sex outside of marriage and a premise encouraging the pursuit of personal desires, without concern for the will of God.
(Pa, B, LLL, N, SS, V, AA, D, M) ; While showing compassion is a central theme, the predominant lifestyle is godless so the primary worldview is pagan with biblical/moral elements; 23 obscenities and no profanities; one fight scene with a punch to the face; an unmarried couple sleeps together regularly and in one instance are obviously having sex while not being shown nude; a woman in a homeless shelter is trying to sleep when a man tries to get in bed with her; blurry view of a man in his shower; alcohol is consumed and in one instance results is clear drunken behavior, another character discusses his DUI arrests; dishonesty, pride, jealousy.
TYLER PERRY’S GOOD DEEDS is the story of an extremely stable and successful businessman Wesley Deeds (Tyler Perry) whose stability is shaken by his encounter with a homeless woman and her daughter. While Deeds shows concern and compassion the movie is flawed by foul language, sex outside of marriage and a premise encouraging the pursuit of personal desires, without concern for the will of God.
Deeds works long hours trying to save the company his father started while at the same time helping reform his wild brother who’s had several DUI arrests. He lives with his fiancé and they seem to be moving slowly toward marriage while he only makes it home at night in time for sex and sleep.
Lindsey (Thandie Newton) is a single mother left to support her daughter who is failing to do so. She is kicked out of her apartment and left homeless. In her first encounter with Deeds she takes his private parking space and engages in a vulgar shouting match when she returns to find her car hooked up to be towed, with her daughter in it.
Lindsey encounters Deeds again when she is working as the night janitor and Deeds is simply working late. Deeds gradually learns just how horrible Lindsey’s financial situation is and shows compassion. She winds up being the spark that snaps him out of the routine he has obediently been following and encourages him to pursue dreams of his own rather than the dreams of his parents.
The problem with the premise is that many families are actually destroyed by one spouse or the other tiring of their responsibilities, snapping out of their routine, and pursuing some dream of their own leaving destitute children behind. There are countless wonderful stories of people pursuing their dreams but there are countless horror stories as well. The wise person seeks the will of God and lets God put dreams in their heart. God’s will never includes selfishness, sin or irresponsibility.
GOOD DEEDS contrasts the lifestyles of the wealthy and the homeless. It also contrasts the response to the poor by Deeds and by his family (his brother and his mother). Deeds shows compassion, his family shows contempt. Good deeds are preferable to bad deeds but the world needs more than pagans doing good deeds. It needs people who live guided by the Creator of the universe to do what is good by his standards.
GOOD DEEDS has many good qualities. The acting and production values are excellent. But, it contains considerable light foul language (no f-words) and Deeds has sex with his fiancé, one scene of which, while not containing graphic nudity, is graphic in its sexuality. Movieguide® advises extreme caution and encourages the filmmakers to cut out the objectionable material and include clear reference to pursuing God’s will. Tyler Perry has given honor to God in several of his previous movies, but he continues to include elements that cut his potential audience size.
