More Detail:

BRINGING UP BATES: “Roaring Bates and Pending Due Dates” features several major family milestones for the conservative Christian family. The series follows the Bates family, mostly located in Tennessee. Gil and Kelly Jo Bates have 19 children, many of whom have grown up, married and are starting families of their own.

Season 9: Episode 14 opens with Josie and Kelton Balka’s housewarming party as the family discusses how much they enjoy spending time together and celebrating one another. Then, Chad and Erin Payne help Evan and Carlin Stewart prepare their nursery for Baby Layla, expected to arrive any day. Chad shares how much he enjoys using his talents to serve his family.

A few days later, Kelly Jo accompanies Carlin to what’s supposed to be a routine prenatal appointment because Evan has to work. The doctor has a hard time seeing Baby Layla move in the womb and decides to admit Carlin to the hospital. Though Carlin is worried about her baby, Kelly Jo is a very kind and encouraging presence. Once Carlin is admitted, she quickly gives birth to Baby Layla. In Carlin’s talking-head interview, she gives a very passionate pro-life, pro-motherhood speech about celebrating the life of her child, and how important it is to be a godly mother, and how God has blessed her with this opportunity.

After Layla’s birth, Gil and Kelly Jo meet with their sons, Trace and Zach. Trace shares that he’s recently broken up with his girlfriend. The family talks about how valuable it was that Trace remained pure during the relationship. This scene really edifies child-parent relationships and extols the value of a parent’s advice and wisdom.

The episode then veers to two parties around Valentine’s Day, both of which are extremely family oriented. The first party is a couples’ party where Katie Bates has the opportunity to introduce her family to Travis, a young man whom she hopes to court. At the party, the couples compliment each other and participate in multiple games.

The second party is for “I Love You Day” and includes all members of the family. Given that it’s 2020, the family dresses up in wholesome 1920s style garb from the “Roaring Twenties.” Some people dress up as gangsters. Two people specifically dress up as Al Capone. Kelly Jo introduces the inaugural “Biggest Heart” award that she gives to Lawson, who isn’t in attendance. Lawson has been overseas this episode helping a young girl who’s undergoing heart surgery in the Philippines.
