The song “Steve’s Lava Chicken” from A MINECRAFT MOVIE just made history as the shortest tune to ever crack the Billboard Hot 100 list, clocking in at only 34 seconds.
“It’s one of those things,” director Jared Hess previously told Deadline when discussing the popularity of the movie. “There was an immense audience that was so passionate about the game and for whom Minecraft was such a key part of their childhood adolescence, just something that they loved.”
This massive audience has loved more than just the movie itself as the “Lava Chicken” tune became a sensation on TikTok, racking up 7 million streams from April 18 through April 24, causing it to land at No. 78 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
“Steve’s Lava Chicken” isn’t the first tune to go viral that A MINECRAFT MOVIE star Jack Black has created for a movie. In 2023, he dreamed up “Peaches” while on the set of THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, and it ended up peaking at No. 56 on the Billboard charts during its five week stay. Two years later, the song boasts over 121 million views on YouTube.
Meanwhile, A MINECRAFT MOVIE continues its stellar box office run, closing in on a $820 million global gross, while also serving as the No.1 domestic movie this year, so far. While already having a large audience due to the game’s popularity, the movie has proven to be such a hit through a light-hearted storyline that focuses on family-friendly values. A MINECRAFT MOVIE is a funny, light-hearted tale with deep meaning. It has a strong redemptive, morally uplifting worldview where people find meaning, strength, love, and courage in friendship to fight evil. A once self-absorbed character risks his life to save his friend. The evil queen says to hope, dream and create is to suffer, but the hero rebukes her by telling her that cowards choose to destroy things because it’s easier. A MINECRAFT MOVIE has lots of action violence, some light foul and crude language, rude humor and some scary images. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children and young teenagers.
Fans of the game have also enjoyed that the movie follows the general rules of the game, especially with there being no real plot to follow, making these rules the only experience that all players are guaranteed to share.
“There [were] also physics and rules of the gameplay we applied to the movie, so anything that we built in the film, fans could go back and create in the game,” Hess said. “That was a super-important element, but we also wanted to push it as well and create a new experience beyond just the gameplay.”
It is fun to see all aspects of this carefully crafted movie succeed as it serves as yet another example to Hollywood of the types of movies that audiences truly desire.
