The cast of HOPPERS might be the stars of the hit Pixar movie, but they give all the credit to the animators who brought their characters to life.
“What I do think is amazing…and this is obviously the incredible talent of the animators and the team behind this, but you start to….see all this stuff coming back, and all the early renderings and versions, and you’re like, ‘Wait, that’s kind of starting to look like me,’” Jon Hamm told Rotten Tomatoes. “It’s one thing if it’s a person — that they can just draw a kind of version of you, but when you’re playing a beaver or a shark…you’re just like, ‘That kind of looks like me.’”
Castmate Bobby Moynihan added, “Or you see something that’s…like, influenced, or something that you do — man, it’s the coolest.”
“You hear the voice and then you see the character, and you’re like, ‘How do they do that?’” Hamm said.
Piper Curda, who plays lead character Mabel, also praised HOPPERS’ director, Daniel Chong.
“One of the main rules for making a phenomenal Pixar movie is having Daniel at the helm. This wouldn’t be half the movie it is without him and his direction and his brain,” she said.
In HOPPERS, “Animal-lover Mabel seizes an opportunity to use a new technology to ‘hop’ her consciousness into a lifelike robotic beaver and communicate directly with animals,” per a synopsis from Pixar’s website. “As she uncovers mysteries in the animal world beyond anything she could have imagined, Mabel must rally the entire animal kingdom to face a major imminent human-threat.”
Reflecting on her role as Mabel in an interview with Third Coast Review, Curda shared, “The thing I love about her and what makes me feel really like I really understand her on a deeper level is that all of [her actions are] coming from a place of caring.”
“A lot of us can relate to that because all around us, we’re seeing a lot of suffering and we want to do something about it, but it feels like there’s nothing we can do. And that’s what fuels her,” she continued. “That’s something I one-hundred-percent relate to and other people do . It’s what makes her journey so interesting to watch.”
Movieguide®’s -1 content score review praised HOPPERS’ “Strong moral, pro-life worldview” but advised caution for younger children due to some scary moments and creatures.
HOPPERS’ combination of beautiful animation and emotional storyline has made it one of Pixar’s best movies of the past few years. Check it out in theaters now!
