COCOMELON will leave Netflix for Disney+. Here’s what we know so far.
Beginning in 2027, the hit preschool cartoon will find a new streaming home on Disney+, but the spin-off series COCOMELON LANE will remain on Netflix.
COCOMELON follows a young boy named JJ and his friends and family through a series of songs and rhymes. A synopsis of the series says, “JJ and his friends dance and sing, they teach viewers about colors, counting, kindness, sharing, eating vegetables, respecting your parents, loving the outdoors, and caring for pets.”
There is no clear reason why the show is switching platforms, but insiders have some ideas. Deadline reported, “Per sources close to the negotiation, Netflix did make an offer to renew the show at a license fee higher than the current one but was outbid by Disney.”
Netflix also cited its declining viewership, which has gone down 60% since 2023, as a reason to not renew.
It isn’t totally surprising that interest in COCOMELON has waned. Nielsen reported that “Engagement with BLUEY, which doubled its viewing time from 2022 to 43.9 billion viewing minutes, was strong enough for it to overtake COCOMELON, which was the top program for kids in 2021 and 2022.”
Another possible reason for the change is Netflix’s recent acquisition of the classic show SESAME STREET. A statement from Netflix revealed, “Elmo, Cookie Monster, Abby Cadabby, and all their friends are coming to Netflix later this year, with Sesame Street’s all-new, reimagined 56th season — plus 90 hours of previous episodes — available to audiences worldwide.”
Regardless of the reason, though, families will still have access to COCOMELON content on Disney+.
COCOMELON prides itself on being able to use music to teach children how to navigate daily tasks. A video posted to Instagram shows parents going through their day singing COCOMELON songs to their children to help them learn.
People in the comment section seem to agree that COCOMELON has been helpful to them.
“Truly a song for every moment! It’s COCOMELON time always at our house! 🙌 And especially during my son’s ‘workouts’ (therapies)!” one person commented. Another user added, “This is actually how we get through every moment of every day 🤣 it’s the survival anthem for moms!”
Movieguide® has noted that while COCOMELON can be a very positive and interactive show, there are some major concerns.
Movieguide®’s season 12 review reads, “episode two features a song that promotes witchcraft as three girls dress up as witches for Halloween. While the first season of COCOMELON LANE, a Netflix exclusive spinoff of the series, was controversial for its inclusion of a same-sex couple who encouraged their son to dance while wearing a tutu.”
Time will tell what kind of new content COCOMELON comes out with, but no matter the platform it’s on, parents should be cautious and preview the show before showing it to their children.
