THE VOICE winner Adam David had a lot to overcome, but his coach, Michael Bublé, couldn’t be more impressed with his talent and story.

“I am going to tell you right now, I have nothing to do with it,” Bublé told Parade. “Zero. We’re friends. I’m not his coach; I’m not his teacher. He’s a killer musician.”

“He knows exactly what he’s doing. He has all the talent and ambition in the world,” Bublé explained. “I think more than anything, he needed a partner, a friend to help sometimes lift him up when he was having doubts.”

David had doubts about his abilities after previously struggling with addiction. He stayed sober for nearly five years before his THE VOICE audition.

When David played Austin’s South by Southwest festival for the first time six years ago, he couldn’t completely enjoy the career high because he was deep into his addiction.

“I felt really good about myself [after playing SXSW], but I was using heavily and I didn’t sleep for days — which was normal for me at the time,” David told Lyndsanity last week. “And on the way home, I was just coming down and feeling really, really awful.”

He felt at a loss, “tired,” and “trapped.”

“I called my mom. My mom’s always been there…And I was like, ‘I think I’m done. I need to figure this out,’” he said.

“And that began the process of reaching out to MusiCares and starting the application process. And in a couple weeks, I was in treatment,” he said. After that, he was able to stay sober.

When David auditioned for THE VOICE, Bublé was ecstatic to have him on his team.

“No joke, I remember distinctly there being about 15 or 10 seconds left on the clock as Adam’s Blind Audition song [‘Baby I Love Your Way’] was winding down and I was saying to the other coaches, ‘Please don’t turn, don’t turn.’ I didn’t want him to get stolen. Then, when it happened, the second I got him, I ran backstage and I said, ‘I just got my guy on my team.’”

Bublé credited viewers for voting for David.

“The thing that I am tripping out about more than anything is knowing how important those people feel about their vote,” he said. “It’s not thrown away. It gives you confidence in your own taste.”

David teased that he may collaborate on new music with Bublé soon.

“Obviously, I want to continue growing my relationship with Michael,” he exclusively told Good Housekeeping. “I don’t think I can reveal anything truly, but we’ve had some conversations about things. And actually, I spoke with [THE VOICE season 26 winner] Sofronio Vasquez, and we’ve had some conversations, too.”

Fans can keep an ear out for the artist — David also plans to make a record and go on tour soon.
