Rapper Snoop Dogg Gives Up Smoking: ‘Want To See My Grandkids Grow’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Known for smoking copious amounts of weed, rapper Snoop Dogg revealed that he is kicking the habit for the sake of his health and family.
“After much consideration and conversation with my family, I’ve decided to give up smoke. Please respect my privacy at this time,” Snoop wrote on Instagram and X, formerly Twitter, adding, “I’m giving up smoke.”
While the decision comes as a shock to many of Snoop’s fans, given his long history with marijuana, it seems to be fueled by a desire to care for his family. Earlier this year, he told the Daily Mail that he wants to cut back on his smoking so he can be there for his grandkids.
“Being a grandfather has changed me in multiple ways,” he told MailOnline. “The main way is being concerned with how I live, how I move, the kind of people I’m associated with because I want to see my grandkids grow old.”
“The only way I can do that is to take precautionary steps as far as how I move, who I hang out with, where I go out, my intake, what am I intaking?” he continued. “Am I doing extracurricular, or am I just doing what I’m supposed to be doing?”
While smoking marijuana is often viewed as a safe activity, studies have shown that smoking weed can have a worse effect on a person’s lungs than smoking tobacco, causing scarring to lung tissue and damage to small blood vessels. Throughout the years, multiple people who know Snoop personally have said that he smokes up to 150 joints a day or half a pound of weed.
While some of his followers have mocked his decision, the rapper has seen large support from his fans and friends.
Snoop and singer T-Pain recently released a music video where they are seen smoking. T-Pain issued a disclaimer on X, saying, “This video was filmed before @SnoopDogg stopped smoking. Stay strong Unc #support.”
Given his widespread audience, seeing Snoop Dogg publicly giving up his smoking habit is encouraging. Hopefully, it helps others realize that smoking marijuana is not a harmless activity but rather has adverse effects on a person’s health.
