Fans of THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE just got an exciting update on the status of the massively popular movie’s sequel.

“I am co-producing the animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. with [Illumination  CEO Chris Meledandri],” Nintendo’s game director and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto said at a recent shareholders meeting. “We have reached a point where we are confident that the new movie will be an entertaining film, so we have announced its theatrical release for next spring.”

He continued, “This is similar to game development; we want to release something that we are confident will satisfy our consumers. I always tell our teams to ‘work for the consumer, not for your boss.’”

“We are hard at work on the next movie, and we’re working very closely with the team at Nintendo,” Meledandri added. “It’s my hope that the movie will entertain and be embraced by the core fans first, but we also hope that the film will appeal to new fans who have not yet embraced Mario and the world of Nintendo.”

The sequel was announced in 2024, with a planned premiere date of April 3, 2026.

Miyamoto and Meledandri announced in a video posted to Nintendo’s YouTube channel that Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic would return as the movie’s directors.

“Rest assured, we’ll be obsessing over every detail to get it right,” Meledandri said, while Miyamoto assured fans the movie will “have a bright and fun story” that explores more of the world that was set up in THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE.

Not much is known about the movie, but a press release from NBCUniversal posted earlier this year accidentally revealed the sequel’s title. Per Newsweek, the release included SUPER MARIO WORLD in a list of upcoming movies from the studio. It has since been deleted from the official press release.

Newsweek explained this title would make sense, as it connects to the “tease” at the end of THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE.

“The game was the first to feature Mario’s trusty steed, a dinosaur named Yoshi, who hatches from an egg in the game,” the outlet wrote. “The same egg was seen in the post-credits scene in THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, leading many to believe that the film’s sequel would heavily feature the dinosaur companion.”

The title of the sequel could still change, but either way, fans are excited to see their favorite video game characters return to the big screen!
