Will This Iconic Character Return for SHREK 5?
By Movieguide® Contributor
John Lithgow hopes to return to the SHREK movies for the franchise’s upcoming fifth installment.
“[I would] say yes in a minute,” he told PEOPLE when asked if he would consider rejoining the movie’s cast.
Lithgow voiced Lord Farquaad in the first movie, the ruler of the kingdom of Duloc and a fan-favorite character. However, there’s a problem — Lord Farquaad was memorably swallowed by a dragon at the end of the movie.
“It turns out it’s impossible to recover from being eaten by a dragon,” the actor joked.
Some fans are holding out hope for a plot twist that could lead to Farquaad reappearing, but Lithgow made it clear that the movie’s makers “haven’t approached me.”
“I know nothing about it and no, I’m not a part of it,” he emphasized.
Lithgow might not be appearing in SHREK 5, but stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz have all been confirmed as cast members.

He also let slip that his character, Donkey, will be getting his own spin-off movie.
“Donkey’s gonna have his own movie,” the actor shared. “We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a SHREK, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].”
Little is known about SHREK 5’s plot line, but The Hollywood Reporter wrote that it will premiere July 1, 2026, “25 years after the original SHREK hit theaters.” “The feature has long been in development and will arrive 16 years after previous entry, SHREK FOREVER AFTER, which bowed in 2010 and earned $752.6 million globally,” THR continued.
The SHREK movies are always a hit with fans and critics alike. SHREK FOREVER AFTER received a +2 content rating from Movieguide®.
