GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE

"Redemptive Comic Book"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE extends the Christian content of the first GHOST RIDER movie to create a redemptive comic book thriller. In the new story, a Christian holy man asks Johnny Blaze to use the ghost rider to find and protect a woman and her child. The Devil, who’s come to earth in the form of a man named Roarke, wants to take over the boy to increase his power. In return, the holy man promises Johnny to help him exorcise the demonic ghost rider from his soul.

GHOST RIDER 2 makes no bones about its comic book origins. So, this isn’t Shakespeare. However, its Christian content adds moral, spiritual, and thematic heft to the story. Like all of us, Johnny Blaze, the hero of the piece, is a character caught between Heaven and Hell. In his sinful nature, Johnny has made a literal “deal with the Devil.” Consequently, he’s been cursed and driven mad. But, what the Devil intended for evil, God has turned around for good, to save many lives. However, GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE contains plenty of violence and some foul language, so strong caution is advised.

More Detail:

GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE extends the Christian content of the first GHOST RIDER movie to create a redemptive comic book thriller.

The movie opens in Eastern Europe. A group of bad guys storm a secret mountain monastery looking for a boy and his mother. The boy, Danny, and his mother, Nadya, escape with the help of Moreau, a black believer working with the monks. However, they also break away from Moreau, whom they don’t trust.

To help find Danny and Nadya, Moreau goes to Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stuntman who made a pact with the Devil to save his father’s life. In return, Johnny becomes possessed by the Ghost Rider, a fiery demon who locates the evil souls of wicked men and sends them to Hell. Moreau believes Johnny can use the Ghost Rider to help him find Danny and Nadya and protect them. He tells Johnny that the mother also made a pact with the Devil to give him a son. The Devil is now posing on Earth as a middle-aged super-villain named Roarke. As Roarke, the Devil hopes to perform a satanic ritual on Danny to destroy Danny’s soul, take over his body, and gain more power.

Can Johnny use the Ghost Rider to stop Roarke and his evil henchmen? If he does, will Moreau keep his promise to free Johnny from the Ghost Rider forever?

In this episode, viewers learn that the Ghost Rider is a former angel kidnapped by the Devil. The angel’s duty was to roam the Earth and save souls for Christ. While imprisoned in Hell, the Devil corrupted the angel. As a result, the angel went mad and now he roams the Earth hunting the evil souls of wicked men and sending them to Hell. Johnny asks Moreau if the good angel still lurks somewhere inside the Ghost Rider. Moreau thinks it’s possible.

In another scene, Johnny has to confess his biggest sin to Moreau as part of the ritual in getting rid of the Ghost Rider. Johnny also takes communion before getting rid of the Ghost Rider. Once rid of the Rider, however, Johnny may now lack the power to stop the Devil and save the boy.

All this sets the stage for a final confrontation with Roarke and his evil minions.

GHOST RIDER 2 makes no bones about its comic book origins. After all, this isn’t Shakespeare. That said, its Christian content adds some moral, spiritual, and thematic heft to the story. Like all of us, Johnny Blaze, the hero of the piece, is a character caught between Heaven and Hell. In his sinful nature, Johnny has made a literal “deal with the Devil.” Consequently, he’s been cursed and driven mad, but what the Devil intended for evil, God has turned around for good, to save many lives. It happened with Joseph and his brothers in Genesis, and it happened with Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross, which is symbolized by the communion bread Johnny takes from Moreau.

GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE contains plenty of violence and some foul language, so strong caution is advised.
