What You Need To Know:
Black-and-white location photography add to the comic film noir style of THE WOMAN CHASER. The movie goes on a too long, however, which may leave many viewers finding the movie a little tedious. THE WOMAN CHASER also has a nihilistic pagan worldview, explicit sexual situations with brief nudity, strong foul language, and a sequence where Richard corrupts a middle-aged, female Salvation Army officer. Regrettably, there may be some truth in what this ultimately abhorrent movie is saying about Hollywood and the human condition, but that is not the whole embodiment of the truth, because Jesus Christ and God’s Word, the Bible gives the full Truth
Content:
(PaPaPa, HH, ABAB, LLL, V, SS, NN, AA, D, Ho, MM) Strong pagan worldview that is somewhat nihilistic, though not completely, with a humanist subtext in an anti-Christian depiction of a corruptible Salvation Army officer & its nihilism; at least 25 obscenities, 5 profanities, a few sexual vulgarities, & man throws up after drinking too much one night; mild film noir violence such as man sets building on fire, man pushes woman away & implied truck accidents; depicted sexual fornication & incestuous subplot is not fully consummated; upper male & female nudity in sexual contexts & some inoffensive naturalistic nudity, plus a few people in underwear; alcohol use & drunkennes; much smoking; man goes to homosexual bar where apparent homosexual pianist sings “My Buddy”; and, flawed protagonist takes advantage of women, some corrupt business practices, betrayal, & man resorts to arson after being betrayed but suffers for his crime.
More Detail:
THE WOMAN CHASER is a bleak comic satire about a frustrated used car salesman. Patrick Warburton, who played Elaine’s on-again, off-again boyfriend in TV’s SEINFELD, stars as Richard Hudson, the crafty, aggressive owner of a used car lot in Los Angeles, circa 1960. Richard decides his career isn’t as fulfilling as he wants, so he decides to, as he himself puts it, “tie up in a single package my reason for existing.” What else can that be in the City of Angles (as opposed to Angels), but to make a movie? With help from his stepfather, Richard makes a 63-minute crime movie with existentialist themes. His fight with the studio to maintain the short length of his movie, however, drives him criminally insane.
Black-and-white location photography adds to the comic film noir style of THE WOMAN CHASER, which is based on an old pulp novel. The movie goes on a bit too long, however, which may leave many viewers finding the movie a little tedious. THE WOMAN CHASER also has a strong pagan worldview that is somewhat nihilistic, explicit sexual situations with brief nudity, strong foul language, and a sequence where Richard corrupts a middle-aged, female Salvation Army officer. This sequence, and his fight with the studio, convinces Richard that everyone, including those closest to him, has their price. Thus, it is the empty materialism of the humanity which is probably the one thing that finally drives him insane.
Regrettably, there may be some truth in what THE WOMAN CHASER is saying to viewers about Hollywood and the human condition, but that is not the whole embodiment of the truth, because Jesus Christ (and God’s Word, the Bible) gives the full and most real Truth. Jesus is the Final Answer. He is the Ultimate Solution. Do not put your trust in Man, even in church leaders, no matter how nice they may seem on the surface. Instead, put your trust in Jesus Christ, who is the Word Incarnate. Worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.
Bearing all these things in mind, the MOVIEGUIDE® verdict on THE WOMAN CHASER is that, despite its possible redeeming qualities, its abhorrent qualities finally overcome its few good intentions.
