MATLOCK Fans Rejoice, CBS Announces Official Reboot

By Movieguide® Contributor

CBS has announced a reboot of the legal drama MATLOCK!

The formal logline reads: “After achieving success in her younger years, the brilliant septuagenarian Madeline Matlock rejoins the work force at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption from within.”

While the lead character, Madeline Matlock, never appeared in the original show, the reboot is said to be heavily inspired by the original.

The original MATLOCK starred Andy Griffith and ran for nine seasons from 1986-1995. The show spawned spinoff JAKE & THE FATMAN (1987-1992), which had its own spinoff: DIAGNOSIS: MURDER (1991-2002) all the while generating five made-for-TV movies.

The reboot will star Kathy Bates as Madeline Matlock. Jennie Snyder Urman, creator of JANE THE VIRGIN, Joanna Klein and Eric Christian Olsen, from NCIS: LA, will executive produce along with Bates.

MATLOCK will breathe new life into one of TV’s most iconic crime dramas, bringing joy to new and returning fans alike.

Movieguide® previously reported on former MATLOCK star Andy Griffith’s faith:

Actor Andy Griffith, best known for THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW and MATLOCK, recalled how God’s grace is evident in life’s most difficult trials.

“Each of us faces pain, no two ways about it. But I firmly believe that in every situation, no matter how difficult, God extends grace greater than the hardship, and strength and peace of mind that can lead us to a place higher than where we were before,” Griffith wrote in an article from 1996. “Let me tell you about one of the hardest times in my own life, and how I found this to be true.”
