What You Need To Know:

THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY begins with a brilliant mathematician, Ramanujan, struggling to find work in India using his astounding gifts. He eventually receives an invitation to go to Cambridge University in England to work with some of the world’s leading mathematicians. In England his genius confounds the scholars who are offended when he says his ideas come from his god. Dr. G.H. Hardy reluctantly invites Ramanujan to work with him in pursuit of some important solutions. Hardy, an avowed atheist, must struggle with Ramanujan’s belief in God-given order.

The math in THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY is far beyond anything the average moviegoer can understand, but the movie’s story of genius and prejudice is clear. God, the God of the Bible, doesn’t bestow gifts only on believers. Many of Hollywood’s most gifted filmmakers are not believers. The beauty and order in the universe is a sign from God to man revealing God’s glory. THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY has some wonderful moments that humble unbelievers, but it deserves very strong caution because of some Hindu elements, which are, of course, false.

Content:

(B, C, FRFR, V, N, D, M) A light biblical worldview to the extent that the movie pits atheism against a world with god-created order, and there are even some Christian references, but the main character is a Hindu and believes in a false God; no foul language; some racial violence, including a mugging; no sexual content; upper male nudity; no alcohol use; smoking; and, racism is obvious in the movie but is shown as evil and a mother hides letters from a wife to her husband rather than mail them.

More Detail:

THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY is the story of a mathematical genius from India going to Cambridge University in England during World War I. The movie contains some racially inspired violence and some positive references to the Hindu religion, but makes a strong case for the existence of God-created order in the universe.

The story begins with Srinivasa Ramanujan (Dev Patel) struggling to find work in Madras, India using his astounding gift as a mathematician. Even his mentors can’t understand the brilliant calculations he creates. He eventually receives an invitation to go to Cambridge University in England to work with some of the world’s leading mathematicians. He agrees to go with the promise that he will call for his young wife to join him as soon as possible.

In England, his genius confounds the scholars, who wonder how he arrives at such magnificent ideas. He informs them that they come to him from his Hindu god. He claims to see beautiful mathematical order in the universe, from the sand to the stars. Many at Cambridge find it offensive that a poor boy from India has much higher abilities than themselves, but Dr. G.H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons) reluctantly invites Ramanujan to work with him in pursuit of some important solutions. Hardy, an avowed atheist, must struggle with Ramanujan’s belief in God-given order.

Here, it’s worth noting that Hindu teaching contains a sense of order to the point that you’re supposedly born with a fate. Ramanujan’s family believed he was born into a caste that wasn’t allowed to travel overseas. Ramanujan ignored this and traveled. Mother Teresa in Calcutta upset Hindus by caring for children who they considered doomed by their fate to die. Christianity sees order in the universe, with a Personal God at the top of that order who loves mankind. Christians actively seek to bring heaven to earth because they see God’s order as compassionate. Jesus gave His life to free mankind from the shackles of sin and death.
