High School Students Start Grocery Delivery Business to Help the Elderly

By Allyson Vannatta, Staff Writer

A 17-year-old high-school student came up with a way for his generation to help senior citizens get what they need while they’re stuck at home.

Daniel Goldberg founded Zoomers to Boomers, a website where senior citizens can submit grocery lists to be picked up by a high-school student and delivered to their home. Zoomers stands for Generation Z, while Boomers is the popular generation from the mid-1900s.

This is an effort to help elderly people who are staying at home or have compromised immune systems.

“We go to grocery stores and do our best to get everything they ask for,” Goldberg said.

The young man’s inspiration for the idea came from his father, who is an ER doctor at Cottage Hospital working on the front lines every day.

He said, “I was just siting at home twiddling my thumbs. I was like: ‘There has to be something I can do to try help out in the community.’ I started thinking and brainstorming on how I can help.”

Goldberg said they don’t interact with the people they deliver with, but knows they are thankful.

He said, “Every senior we deliver to is super, super happy and grateful, and beaming with joy when we show up.”

The service is offered Monday through Saturday and senior citizens can place orders though Zoomers to Boomers website, or through Gladden and Sons Produce.

They don’t charge a delivery fee and don’t expect tips either. They just collect the amount of money they need for the groceries. Any tips given are donated to people in need in the Santa Barbara community.

The team of students also follow health guidelines by wearing masks and gloves when delivering
