Liam Neeson Denies Rumors of His Return to Upcoming Star Wars Spinoff for Disney+

By Movieguide® Staff

STAR WARS fans were elated to discover that Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen would reprise their roles in the upcoming Disney+ series focused on Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The initial announcement led fans to believe others from the Star Wars universe, like Samuel L. Jackson and Liam Neeson, might return to the franchise. However, the 69-year-old Neeson denied the rumors in a recent interview with late-night host Jimmy Kimmel.

“I heard Ewan McGregor was going to do a series,” Neeson said. “No, I don’t think so. No, I haven’t been approached.”

Neeson starred alongside McGregor as Qui-Gon Jinn in the 1999 prequel to the original trilogy, THE PHANTOM MENACE. The Disney+ series is set to follow Obi-Wan’s character leading up to his appearance in 1997’s A NEW HOPE, where Alec Guinness offered the first portrayal of the fan-favorite character in the sweeping STAR WARS franchise.

Unlike McGregor and Christensen, who will likely reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, Neeson’s character was killed in THE PHANTOM MENACE before the events of A NEW HOPE.

The series will also star Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.

Disney announced more spinoff series after the successful first two seasons of THE MANDALORIAN.

Lucasfilm and Disney recently came under fire from fans after firing THE MANDALORIAN actress Gina Carano.

Movieguide® previously reported:

In a recent interview on The Ben Shapiro Show, Actress Gina Carano addressed her firing from the Disney+ show THE MANDALORIAN, her time as an employee for Lucasfilm, and Hollywood’s double standard.

Carano claimed that while on set, Disney silenced her conservatives views in favor of a single narrative.

“They’ve been all over me and they’ve been watching me like a hawk,” Carano said. “And I’m watching people on the same production and they can say everything they want, and that’s where I had a problem. I had a problem because I wasn’t going along with the narrative.”

Carano added: “I was prepared at any point to be let go because I’ve seen this happen to so many people. I’ve seen the looks on their faces. I’ve seen the bullying that takes place, and so when this started, they point their guns at you, and you know it’s only a matter of time. I’ve seen it happen to so many people, and I just thought to myself, ‘you’re coming for me, I know you are.’ They’re making it very obvious through their employees who were coming for me, and so I was like, ‘I’m going to go down swinging and I’m going to stay true to myself.'”
