Disney+ Adds R-Rated Movies, Breaking Promise to Keep the Platform ‘Family-Friendly’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Disney+ continues to backtrack in its commitment to make the service family-friendly. This time, they’ve added R-rated movies.

Disney+ uploaded DEADPOOL, DEADPOOL 2, and LOGAN to the platform, all of which are rated R. The movies were made by 20th Century Fox, which was recently acquired by Disney.

All three movies are extremely inappropriate for children.

LOGAN, for example, “is set in a very dark world filled with brutal violence. It turns out that the mad scientist genetically created Laura from Logan’s DNA and experimented on her, so she has sharp steel claws hidden in her hands like Logan does and can regenerate herself quickly like the younger Logan used to do. Throughout the movie, Logan and Laura must fight and kill many of the soldiers that the mad scientist sends to kill Logan and capture Laura. Much of the killing involves Logan and Laura stabbing and slicing the soldiers to death with their claws,” according to Movieguide® review.

“The movie also contains constant foul language, including abundant ‘f’ words,” the Movieguide® review continues. “Also, Logan swears several times using Christ’s name and many times in front of the young girl. In addition, during a montage of Logan chauffeuring people in his limo, one girl riding with a bunch of other girls wearing prom dresses briefly exposes her breasts to Logan as a lewd prank.”

Parents obviously want to protect their children from this explicit content and can do so with parental controls available on the platform.

The easiest way is to set up a “Kids” profile. This can be done by adding another profile to the Disney+ account, using the “Kids Profile” category.

There is also a feature where, if a child tries to go from a Kids profile to another one, they are asked to complete an exit challenge: being shown four numbers spelled out, then asked to punch the numerals in.

For regular profiles, Disney+ users can set specific content ratings. Select the profile you want to set limits on, then go to “Parental Controls,” then “Content Rating.” After entering your password, users can choose from nine ratings — TV-Y; TV-Y7; TV-Y7-FV; G, G-TV; PG-TV, PG; PG-13; TV-14; R; and TV-MA — to decide what level of mature content to stop at. For example, if you choose PG, all content with a more explicit rating will not be available to stream on the profile.

If you’re an adult who wants to keep your child off your profile, there is also an option to lock adult profiles with a PIN number. To set this up, go to the “Parental Controls” menu and hit “Profile PIN.” After entering your password, you can set a four-digit PIN that will keep others off your profile.

The Parents Television and Media Council released a statement about Disney’s decision to add R-rated content, saying, “While Disney+ points subscribers to its parental controls, the mere presence of R-rated and TV-MA rated content violates the trust and sensibilities of families. What took decades to build is now taking mere months to erase.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the streaming platform’s increasing mature content:

Disney continues to receive backlash after the company announced that it would add mature content to their streaming service Disney+.

In March, Disney+ said that they would be adding more mature content like DAREDEVIL and THE PUNISHER, R-rated Marvel shows previously on Netflix.

Both shows contain violence, strong language, and other content that make them inappropriate for children. This led to the streaming service announcing parental control updates.

These updates include restricting content for specific profiles and using a PIN number to access mature content.
