THE CRUDE OASIS

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

THE CRUDE OASIS tells of deep loneliness, empty as the Kansas wastelands in which the story is set, where husband and wife, Jim and Karen, go through the motions of everyday life without passion or purpose. When Karen sees the man she has been dreaming of night after night, she finally confronts the truths of her life. Ominous at first, THE CRUDE OASIS quickly looses its mystery, menace and momentum, and instead provides platforms of blatant adultery, a hint of homosexuality and obscenities that are as misplaced as the story's characters.

Content:

(H, L, SS, Ho, M) Humanist worldview of self; 5 obscenities; adulterous affairs of both husband & wife, wife & lover kissing sexually & partially undressing lover; hints of a homosexual relationship; and, one scene of attempted suicide.

More Detail:

Human loneliness as vast as the Kansas wastelands is the story’s overriding theme in THE CRUDE OASIS. Karen and Jim are in a childless marriage that offers nothing deeper nor warmer than the few sentences they share in the mornings and at nights before sleeping. Jim leaves the house mysteriously every night, and Karen has a recurring dream of a man coming towards her. When Karen sees the mystery man of her dreams working at the gas station at the edge of town, she stalks him. He leads her to an off-road bar, the Crude Oasis, and it is here that Karen confronts new as well as harsh truths about herself. At first menacing, THE CRUDE OASIS quickly wanes in its mystery as its loses momentum and closes to a tame end. Karen and the “man of her dreams,” Harvey, have little chemistry between them for a convincing show of fiery passions in this modern day fantasy.

The film ebbs to such a low point that the eventual, predictable passions of Karen and Harley look misplaced, contrived and aimless. The cast is as shallow as the film’s attempted sense of mystery. Even though it indulges in a redeeming theme of life’s tenacity, THE CRUDE OASIS is a poorly crafted story of self without morals. Blatant adultery, hints of a homosexual relationship, some obscenities and the humanistic quest for self at all moral costs make for a disappointing film.
