Actor and veterans’ advocate Gary Sinise has been presented with the Charlie Daniels Patriot Award.
“Gary Sinise has set the ‘high water mark’ in support for our vets,” David Corlew, Daniels’ former manager and co-founder of The Charlie Daniels Journey Home Project, said when presenting Sinise with the award.
He continued, “Foundations and support groups can learn so much from this guy. Besides creating an incredible bed of work in the film and entertainment industry, he has utilized it to broaden the reach for all of us, a wonderful example of selfless service. Simply put, he cares, and so do we. Charlie would be very proud that we made this happen.”
According to The Charlie Daniels Journey Home Project’s website, the criteria for receiving the Charlie Daniels Patriot Award is “based on the mission of The Journey Home Project: to support veterans in their return, rehabilitation, and reintegration back into civilian life. The award honors a person, persons, or group that fulfills and exemplifies the efforts and dedication of TJHP’s purpose to continuously care, support and encourage the men, women, and families who have served our great nation.”
“I am honored to receive this award from Charlie Daniels, in his name,” Sinise said upon receiving the award. “To receive an award in his name is a blessing, a privilege, an honor. Why did I get so lucky?”
Daniels was also a longtime advocate for the US military and its veterans, playing hundreds of shows for the troops over the years.
“The Journey Home Project was a culmination of what we had done for quite a few years and that’s to support the military and also to raise money,” Corlew told Forbes about the foundation. “He always had a love for his country and for the military.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Daniels’ patriotism:
“My priorities are God, family, country and work. I don’t always succeed, but I try to keep those as my most important things in my life,” Daniels told the BGEA.
Daniels shared nuggets of his faith and conservative values on Twitter up until his death.
Taste of Country reported, “Daniels also remained vigilant on Twitter, defending American military and police, as well as speaking up for pro-life causes. Each day he’d begin with a series of tweets that became familiar to his followers. He’d also share a morning prayer and then close the day by letting fans know he was signing off.”
