Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin to Return in GREENLAND Sequel
By Movieguide® Staff
Actors Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin will reprise their roles and John and Allison Garrity in GREENLAND: MIGRATION, a sequel to the 2020 thriller GREENLAND.
Joining the actors and production is the same filmmaking crew of director Ric Roman Waugh and writer Chris Sparling.
Despite the original movie having the misfortune of a mid-pandemic release, the sci-fi action-adventure was met with positive reviews from audiences desperate for new movies.
GREENLAND led the box office in over 26 countries. The movie sat atop VOD rentals on Apple and Google Play after its releases on streamer HBO Max.
Waugh said: “‘Greenland’ spoke to our humanity in the middle of a global catastrophic event, highlighting what people are capable of doing to one another, both good and bad, when it’s life or death.”
Variety reported: “In a continuation of the story, the Garrity family, who survive a near-extinction level event when an interstellar comet hits Earth, must leave the safety of the Greenland bunker and embark on a perilous journey across the decimated frozen wasteland of Europe to find a new home.”
The release date is tentatively set for 2022.
A portion of Movieguide®’s review of GREENLAND reads:
GREENLAND is a gripping, heart-stirring disaster movie about a family trying to survive a comet hitting Earth. Chunks from the comet start raining on people and cities. John Garrity, his estranged wife Allison and their young son, Nathan, make a perilous journey to their only hope for sanctuary. Along the way, they get separated and encounter the best and the worst of humanity. Eventually, they only have hours to get to the sanctuary before the largest chunk of the comet smashes Western Europe, killing nearly everyone.
The script to GREENLAND places many exciting, thrilling obstacles in the way of its middle class family and their survival. The plot is constantly intense and riveting. The script relieves the tension by providing many emotional highlights where the characters overcome dangerous obstacles and show great love for one another. That said, some of the situations, events and details in GREENLAND have credibility issues. However, GREENLAND has a very strong morally uplifting, pro-family worldview, with a couple touching, overt Christian references. MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong caution for too much foul language, including nine strong, gratuitous profanities.
