Jeremy Renner has landed his first movie role since his snowplow accident at the beginning of 2023.
Although the actor did star in his reality TV series RENNERVATIONS and the drama series, MAYOR OF KINGSTOWN, Renner had yet to take on a film.
However, he is now slated to join “Daniel Craig in Rian Johnson‘s Netflix sequel KNIVES OUT 3. Renner joins previously confirmed cast members Glenn Close, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny in the forthcoming film, titled WAKE UP DEAD MAN: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY. Writer-director Johnson is a producer, as is Ram Bergman,” per The Hollywood Reporter.
WAKE UP DEAD MAN: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY is set to “drop on Netflix sometime in 2025,” according to a teaser trailer shared by Johnson on Instagram.
The writer and director captioned the video, “We’re about to go into production on it and I AM SLIGHTLY EXCITED.”
The original KNIVES OUT film released in 2019 and “collected more than $310 million at the worldwide box office.”
A synopsis of the film reads, “The circumstances surrounding the death of crime novelist Harlan Thrombey are mysterious, but there’s one thing that renowned Detective Benoit Blanc knows for sure — everyone in the wildly dysfunctional Thrombey family is a suspect. Now, Blanc must sift through a web of lies and red herrings to uncover the truth.”
Part of Movieguide®’s review of the movie reads:
KNIVES OUT is a mystery comedy about a wealthy man, his greedy family, his nurse, and his mysterious death. Harlan Thrombey has built his empire by writing mystery novels and publishing them through his own company. One son takes over the publishing company, while his daughter took a million dollar loan from Harlan and started her own real estate company. As he grew older and his health began to wane, Harlan hired a young nurse named Marta to take care of him and to keep him company. However, when his apparent suicide warrants hiring a private detective, his family erupts into chaos searching for the truth.
KNIVES OUT is a surprisingly accomplished dark comedy, with an all-star cast that delivers the goods. The humor is intelligent and the story keeps viewers guessing, with many unexpected twists. The moral of the story is surprisingly positive, with major themes about the importance of truth and doing the right thing, even when it’s not in one’s favor. However, KNIVES OUT contains lots of foul language, some lewd content and brief marijuana use. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.
Its sequel, GLASS ONION, released in 2022. Movieguide®’s review reads:
GLASS ONION is a sequel to KNIVES OUT, following the famous Southern detective, Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) as he searches for a new case. When a mysterious wooden puzzle box shows up on his doorstep, Blanc finds an invitation to a party and travels to Greece. The exclusive party is a murder mystery party at the home of billionaire Miles Bron. Blanc, along with an eclectic group of characters arrive at the island to take part in Bron’s meticulously planned murder mystery. However, upon his arrival Blanc learns that he was never invited to the party. Bron welcomes him nonetheless, and the mystery unfolds.
GLASS ONION is a masterfully crafted mystery that keeps the audience guessing with every layer that is peeled back. The performances are gripping, led by a hilarious performance once again from Craig. The movie plays on the tropes of classic mystery, detective novels, games, and movies, while also bringing a fresh and inspired story that is sure to keep the viewer on their toes and at the edge of their seats. Despite its captivating execution, Movieguide® advises strong caution for younger audiences due to foul language, some violence and some suggestive elements.
