Kathryn Hahn Says Church Play Role Started Her Passion for Acting

By Movieguide® Contributor

Actress Kathryn Hahn says an early role in a church play steered her toward a career in the entertainment industry.

“I played Psalty the Psalm Book in church in a play called ‘Psalty the Psalm Book,’” she shared during an episode of the “Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend” podcast. “That was my first production I’ve ever done.”

She recalled “staying up very late” to make her Book of Psalms costume “out of a refrigerator box.”

“And then I was in,” Hahn said, pointing to it as the thing that gave her the acting bug.

Hahn has previously spoken about her religious upbringing, telling Vulture, “I grew up culturally Catholic. I went to Catholic school.”

“There is something about having a direct line to God — your own individual relationship, whatever that means,” she said of her faith. “It has been pretty profound.”

In addition to acting, Hahn is also mom to two teenagers — Leonard, 16, and Mae, 14. She shares both children with husband Ethan Sandler.

“I remember looking at the eighth graders and being like, ‘They will never be in eighth grade.’ Like, childhood lasts forever,” Hahn said of watching her kids grow up. “And I look at them now and I’m like, oh, that part is over for them. And so it’s such a weird, short amount of time of — I don’t know what word it would be except for, like, mishegoss.”

She continued, “I’m just trying to work with, like, heart softening around them so they don’t feel all my neuroses around being the working parent. I’m just trying to be a good listener…Being present and sitting and giving them the space.”

Despite her roles in popular movies like HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS and shows like WANDAVISION, Hahn says her kids are less than impressed with her job.

“My kid walked in one time while I was practicing my witch moves [for her role as Agatha in WANDAVISION] and he was like, ‘Oh my God, Mom!’” Hahn laughed. “He was so embarrassed.”

She continued, “He’s a teenager. No one can really admit to their mom that they’re cool, which I understand and respect, but they definitely were a little bit, I would just say, suspiciously nicer to me these days. So I feel like I’m going to take that as a huge compliment. They’re definitely proud for sure.”

Hahn will reprise her WANDAVISION role in the upcoming Disney+ series AGATHA ALL ALONG. Movieguide® previously reported on the show:

Marvel is taking steps to put less “pressure” on its fan base.

“The company is rebranding its streaming efforts as Marvel Television for live-action series and Marvel Animation for its animated shows,” MSN reported.

Many fans are familiar with the connections between the many Marvel shows and movies.

Moving forward, the studio will try to minimize those crossovers.

“The characters still live and breathe in the same universe, but the interconnectivity is not so rigid that you need to watch Project A to understand Project B,” Winderbaum explained. “The hope is that, like the comics, you can just pop in anywhere and have a satisfying experience. We’re trying to dispel the idea that you need to do any kind of setup work to watch anything else.”

Disney+ users will notice the change when AGATHA ALL ALONG premiers in September.

“The Marvel Television banner was folded into Marvel Studios in 2019, with Kevin Feige overseeing all development for the shows being developed for Disney+. AGATHA ALL ALONG, which premieres September 18, will be the first series under the resurrected banner,” Deadline reported.
