During TobyMac’s Rock The Universe performance at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, the singer got candid about the struggles he’s been facing since his son, Truett Foster McKeehan died.
Before his performance, TobyMac said, “Maybe some of you know, but my family and I have been facing the toughest couple months of our lives. For those people that don’t know, my first-born son passed away a couple of months ago and it’s been hard.”
Movieguide® previously reported that McKeehan died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl and amphetamines last October. The young man was an aspiring rapper, who at the time of his death, had just performed his first concert a week before.
He then went on to talk about the support he and his family have received since the unexpected death of his son.
“I appreciate the prayers. I appreciate the encouragement posts, social media, we’re grateful to you. Thank you so much for surrounding us in love,” he said.
“One [thing] somebody told me was this, they said, ‘When something like this happens and we experience loss, like this, you’re going to start reaching for these promises of God. Some of them you thought He promised but you might have been mistaken. God didn’t promise us no suffering or pain, or loss.’”
He finished by talking about promises.
“The promise I’ve been holding on to is that God will never leave us or forsake us. I’m believing that for me, as well as my son, that God will never leave us or forsake us. And I’m grateful for you guys,” he said before starting his performance.
Movieguide® previously reported that the Christian rapper released a song to honor his son earlier this month.
The song, called “21 Years,” features these lyrics:
Is it just across the Jordan?
Or a city in the stars?
Are you singin’ with the angels?
Are you happy where you are?
Well, until this show is over
And you run into my arms
God has you in Heaven
But I have you in my hear
I have you in my heart
