What Danica McKellar Learned From The Lord’s Prayer
By Movieguide® Contributor
Since her decision to follow Christ in recent years, Danica McKellar has been sharing her faith journey as she challenged herself to read through the Bible in a year.
The Lord’s Prayer is one passage that spoke to her, especially when Jesus talks about forgiveness.
“One thing that I do now to fall asleep if I have like a lot of things on my mind, which I often do, is I say the Lord’s Prayer to myself silently,” Danica McKellar said in a video on the Great American Community website. “It’s just so calming. And because I’ve been doing that so often, I like heard it in my head a lot of times, and I’ve been able to really reflect on it.”
The Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 reads:
In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
The actress breaks down the parts of the passage into recognition of God’s holiness, then requests, but it is the part on forgiveness that stuck out.
“That’s the one thing that we’re called upon to do in the Lord’s Prayer, and so it made me think about forgiveness a lot,” McKellar explained.
“It’s actually more important than I realized,” she added.
This passage caused her to meditate deeper on what forgiveness looks like.
“I do believe that forgiveness means to truly in your heart and with all, everything that you are, to wish that other person well, to really wish them love and peace, harmony,” the 49-year-old said.
McKellar admitted that forgiveness is something that she is working on and encouraged her audience to work on as well.
“It’s not easy. Every single person, everybody watching this right now, including myself, has people in their lives we can stand to do more forgiveness and I’ve been working on it, and I will continue to and I hope that you will as well because it’s good for you and it’s what God wants,” she concluded.
McKellar made her goal of reading the Bible in a year! Movieguide® reported on her reflections through her journey:
How could I possibly wrap up my impressions of the Bible in three minutes?” McKellar said.
“First of all, I really, really enjoyed it,” she revealed. “For me, reading the Bible, I just have to say, I felt so comforted. And oddly so, even during the chapters like getting through Job, you know, and the poor guy, he’s suffering and his friends are like, ‘yeah well it’s probably your fault. It’s something you did.’ And it goes on and on and on. There’s still something comforting about it.”
“It’s got to be that it’s God. God’s just in there,” she added. “Again and again, we see that God rewards faithfulness, and God is good. And even through the hard stories, you can see the tough love in there, like a parent with his children.”
McKellar then shared one important theme she recognized throughout the Bible: ego versus humility.
“There’s this theme in the Bible of ego versus humility,” she said. “And I want to say even more so than the story of good versus evil, although that is definitely in there. From the human’s point of view, it feels like the lesson we’re supposed to learn is about ego versus humility and the way to live our lives in humility. And it doesn’t mean that anything is being taken away. Just the opposite. I feel like, if we’re in ego and doing things for our egos, that we may gain things on this earth, material things, but our soul is kind of empty.”
THE WONDER YEARS star recently finished shooting ROYAL CHRISTMAS BALL, which she stars in and co-wrote. She recently gave a plug for the movie coming out in November on Great American Family Network.
“We’re about this shoot the last scene of the movie. This is one for the books, you guys: the dance, mystery, the family, the theme of foster families. Yeah, it’s romance, everything, fantasy, Cinderella themes,” she posted. “You guys are gonna love this movie and I’m so excited for you to see this November on Great American Family. So grateful for this. I don’t even have the words.”
