CAPONE (2020)

"Sobering Gangster Story Marred by Gratuitous Foul Language and Violence"

What You Need To Know:

CAPONE is a psychological biography about notorious Chicago gangster Al Capone’s final year of life. After a 10-year stint in prison, Capone, now in his middle 40s, returns to his family and Florida mansion. Unlike prior years, Capone doesn’t have the same pep in his step. In fact, he has dementia. His declining health makes him hallucinate to the point of violence. Will his family and friends be safe with Capone? Were they ever safe with him?

Available on Amazon and elsewhere, CAPONE isn’t like many gangster flicks of classic Hollywood. It’s more for history buffs who want to learn more about Capone’s final days. As such, it features a powerful title performance by Tom Hardy. CAPONE has a strong pagan worldview where Capone is haunted by the evil, violent decisions of his past. However, his family and friends want to help him due to his declining health. They also value family loyalty, wedding vows and even some elements of Catholic faith. Despite this, CAPONE has lots of gratuitous foul language, bloody violence and other crude behavior. CAPONE is excessive.

More Detail:

CAPONE is a psychological biography about notorious Chicago gangster Al Capone’s final year of life. Available on Amazon and elsewhere, CAPONE has a strong pagan worldview some moral elements and references to Christianity, along with lots of gratuitous foul language, violence and other crude behavior.

Some people know him as the infamous Scarface or Al Capone, but to his friends and family, the notorious gangster was known as “Fonse,” short for Alfonse.

After a 10-year stint in prison, Al Capone aka “Fonse,” now in his 40s, returns to his family and mansion in Florida. However, unlike years prior, Capone doesn’t have the same pep in his step. In fact, he has dementia. Nonetheless, Capone’s doting wife, Mae, takes care of his declining health, and so do Capone’s employees who work on the grounds and in the house. Although Capone has two sons, only one seems to be actively involved with their father.

Due to his dementia, Capone sees people who aren’t really in front of him, including bodies of causalities that met their end while Capone was the head honcho of his notorious gang on the southside of Chicago. It’s challenging for Capone to separate what’s real from what’s in his imagination. One night though, Capone has a stroke that nearly ends his life. His doctor tells Capone’s family and employees that it’s only a matter of time before he dies.

U.S. federal agents don’t really care if Capone dies, considering his past evil antics. However, there’s one agent who feels sympathy for Capone’s family, since they’re attached to his name, but not his crime record. Also, there’s a rumor circulating that Capone hid $10 million, but where is it? Capone tells a hallucination of his that he put it in the swamp waters down by his home. However, when questioned about the money by the feds, Capone’s poor health inhibits him, and he never owns up to where his monetary legacy is.

CAPONE ends on a sobering note. After 90+ minutes of watching Capone’s health unravel, as well as his conscience, filmmakers state that after Capone’s death in 1947, his family changed their names and relocated. No one ever found the lump sum of Capone’s $10 million either.

Tom Hardy delivers a powerful performance as the title character. The makeup and costuming are brilliant too and fit perfectly with the story’s setting. The movie’s image quality is also well-crafted. Viewers should know, however, that this movie isn’t like many of the classic gangster flicks from Hollywood like THE GODFATHER or LITTLE CAESAR, but is more for the history buff who desires to learn more about Capone’s final days.

CAPONE has a strong pagan worldview where Capone is haunted by the evil, violent decisions of his past where he did whatever he pleased with little to no consequences. Positively, there are elements of morality where Capone family and friends want to help him due to his declining health. They also try to look out for his best interests and value family loyalty and the wedding vows “till death do us part.” Also, there are some Catholic characters who display Christian faith. That said, CAPONE has lots of foul language, bloody violence and other crude behavior that warrants extreme caution. CAPONE is excessive.
