More Detail:

“The Pool” is the fourth episode of NBC’s series of THIS IS US. Rebecca and Jack take their family to the local pool. Once there, Kate is cruelly excluded by her classmates for being overweight, Randall wanders off to befriend other black children, and Kevin almost drowns while his parents focus their attentions on Kate and Randall. Grown-up Kate is shown struggling with her image when Toby’s beautiful ex-wife, Josie, shows up unexpectedly. Toby confides that Josie cheated on him, and their break-up led to his struggles with weight gain and thoughts of suicide. Kevin gets a part in a Broadway play he auditions for but discovers that he received the role because of his fame from the sitcom. Meanwhile Randall had frank conversations regarding racism with his biological father, William.

“The Pool” addresses the hard subjects of racism, infidelity and depression. Randall discusses how he and his family still experience racism despite his success and trustworthiness. The episode does a phenomenal job at depicting harsh realities without being overly explicit. There’s less foul language and lewd content in this episode, “The Pool,” but caution is still advised.
