More Detail:

LEGENDS OF OZ: DOROTHY’S RETURN is a fun animated fantasy based on a book by the great grandson of the original author of the Wizard of Oz books.

The story begins with another tornado striking Dorothy Gale’s farm in Kansas. A man from the government comes and says he’s going to condemn every farm and house, including Dorothy’s.

At that moment, Dorothy’s friends in Oz are threatened by the evil Jester, the brother of the Wicked Witch Dorothy accidentally killed. The Jester has stolen back the witch’s broom. Making matters worse, he has combined its power with the power of a magical crystal ball and turned Glenda and other characters into puppets.

The Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion use a rainbow machine to summon Dorothy back to Oz. They get separated, however, and Dorothy has to make her way to the Jester’s castle alone. She gets some help, however, from a fat talking owl named Wiser, a soldier named Marshal Mallow, the China Princess, and a talking tree, who agrees to become “Tugg the tugboat” to take Dorothy and her new friends down a river.

It will take all the heart, brains and courage they can muster to defeat the Jester and restore peace, order and happiness to the Emerald City and the Land of Oz.

LEGENDS OF OZ is not a great movie, but it’s a good movie, with a lot of entertaining fun, colorful characters, and beautiful animation. Only one or two of the songs really stand out, with one of the songs slowing down the plot a little bit too much.

The problems with Wizard of Oz stories include the use of magic and the idea that witches can be both bad and good. This violates the Word of God in the Bible. For the most part, however, LEGENDS OF OZ avoids this pitfall. In fact, at one point, when given the chance to use the Jester’s new magical staff, Dorothy tosses it away and says that her friends don’t need such a device to rule the Land of Oz. Also, though Glenda makes an appearance in the story, she’s more like a Fairy Godmother than a witch. Even better, she only uses her magic “wand” once, to return Dorothy to Kansas.

Thus, with its generally entertaining, uplifting story and characters, LEGENDS OF OZ is a good family movie for practically all ages. It teaches some positive values such as helping others, fighting evil and tyranny, restoring peace and order, and becoming less selfish and conceited. There is, however, a Romantic message about being self-reliant, but it’s rather light.
