Major Media Companies to Fund Employees’ Abortion-Related Travel Expenses

Disney, Netflix, Paramount, Warner Bros., Comcast, Meta, Sony, and other major media companies will cover travel costs for employees seeking abortions after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24.

 SAG-AFTRA, which represents 160,000 entertainment and media professionals, said, “Anyone who believes in the right of women to make their own healthcare decisions should be outraged with today’s archaic and dangerous ruling. Every American deserves and is entitled to an equal right to healthcare choice.”

These abortion-related travel expense plans for media company employees come after the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization which overturned Roe v. Wade, allowing states to make their own rulings on abortion.

Despite Planned Parenthood’s efforts to increase abortion depictions on screen through streaming and movies, the Supreme Court of the United States voted to overturn Roe V. Wade, the case that made getting an abortion a constitutional right.

“The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives,” SCOTUS wrote in their ruling.

“Abortion presents a profound moral question. The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion. Roe and Casey arrogated that authority. The Court overrules those decisions and returns that authority to the people and their elected representatives,” the ruling concludes.

The Supreme Court decision is welcome by many pro-life believers, but is infuriating to Planned Parenthood lobbyists who fought to normalize abortion on screens and thus change public opinion.

Major media and entertainment companies have outlined their plans to cover travel costs for employees seeking abortions if abortions are prohibited in their states.

Disney remains “committed to providing comprehensive access to quality and affordable care” for all employees.

Variety reports that Disney employees who cannot access abortion in their location will receive a travel benefit that allows for “affordable coverage for receiving similar levels of care in another location.”

Netflix offers full-time U.S. employees and their dependents a travel reimbursement for “cancer treatment, transplants, gender affirming care, or abortion.”

Warner Bros. Discovery expanded its healthcare benefits “to cover transportation expenses for employees and their covered family members who need to travel to access abortion and reproductive care.”

Comcast and NBCUniversal will also provide travel resources for employees looking for “medical services and procedures that aren’t available near an employee’s home.”

Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish and chief people officer Nancy Phillips confirmed that company-sponsored health insurance will cover travel expenses for Paramount employees seeking an abortion.

Meta intends to “offer travel expense reimbursements, to the extent permitted by law, for employees who will need them to access out-of-state health care and reproductive services.”  Variety reports, “Sony employees in the U.S. receive reimbursement for travel if it’s required to access healthcare services available under its health plan, which includes reproductive healthcare.”

However, none of these companies have said if they will pay for the trauma counseling for abortion recovery, nor have they said if they will reimburse expenses for infertility and fertility treatments post-abortive mothers often face.

These companies may believe they are appearing “compassionate,” by covering abortion expenses, when in reality a pregnant mother needs support for prenatal and postpartum care, as well more flexible schedules for families.
