DeVon Franklin, Tyler Perry to Produce Faith-Based Movies for Netflix

By Movieguide® Staff

DeVon Franklin and Tyler Perry signed a multi-picture, multi-year first-look deal with Netflix to produce faith-based movies for the streamer.

Their first project, R&B, is a modern retelling of the biblical story of Ruth and Boaz.

“Set in Tennessee, it tells the story of a young woman who escapes the Atlanta music scene to care for an elderly widowed woman. In the process, she finds the love of her life and gains the mother she never had,” a summary reads.

It’s written by Mike Elliott and Cory Tynan, who also wrote Franklin’s faith-based rom-com RELATIONSHIP GOALS.

“I’m so excited to be working with DeVon on this and future projects,” Perry said. “I think in this polarizing world, and at a time where the world seems to be growing colder every day, we both share the common goal of wanting to spread some good. And there’s no better place than Netflix.”

This deal is the latest extension in Netflix’s partnership with Perry that sees him write, direct and produce movies and series for the platform.

Franklin is coming off of the success of his latest project FLAMIN’ HOT.

Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:

FLAMIN’ HOT is a powerful story of how a poor person can succeed in a free market society. You can succeed if you put your mind to it, especially with a little help from your friends and family. The movie contains strong positive Christian content, though some Christians are hypocritical and must grasp the love of Jesus. FLAMIN’ HOT contains some reverse racism and white stereotypes, however, plus some foul language.

“Tyler and I have been great friends for over 15 years, so when he called me to team up on movies that can uplift the human spirit, I jumped at the chance,” Franklin added of the partnership. “And we couldn’t have a better partner than Netflix to help us inspire the world.”

Niija Kuykendall, VP Netflix Film, said, “We couldn’t be more excited to expand our relationship with Tyler Perry Studios. Tyler and DeVon have created some of the most inspiring movies in the faith-based space, so they are perfect partners to help us bring even more of these stories to our members.”
