| May 8, 2013Dear Friend,American television already contains more vulgarity and nudity than should be permitted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Now they are seeking public comment on a plan to reduce their responsibility to limit indecency.In an April 1 Public Notice the FCC announced that it has reduced its backlog of over one million consumer complaints about broadcast indecency by 70 percent. It seeks public comment on a plan to permit indecency that is not “deliberate and repetitive.” This would legitimize and invite the broadcast of spontaneous vulgarity and nudity.Rather than reducing their responsibilities in this area the FCC needs to do much more to fulfill their responsibility and take action on the many complaints from American citizens.

It is also a violation of federal law to air indecent programming or profane language during certain hours. Congress has given the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) the responsibility for administratively enforcing these laws. The FCC may revoke a station license, impose a monetary forfeiture or issue a warning if a station airs obscene, indecent or profane material. Indecency is defined by “prevailing community standards” by calling for stricter enforcement you help let the FCC know that prevailing community standards are not falling so low as to permit any “f-words” and nudity on prime time television. TAKE ACTION Urge the FCC to take action against all indenceny, not just “egregous” indecency.
