How Hollywood Will Look Different Post-COVID-19

By Tess Farrand, Associate Content Editor

Several industries across the globe look different after the coronavirus pandemic and Hollywood is no exception. For entertainers though, it comes back down to the basics of common sense.

“What we’re telling our writers is ‘Don’t be dumb,'” a studio executive told The Hollywood Reporter (THR). “We’re not going to be able to shoot it, so don’t write it.”

Variety reported:

The county’s rules set out stringent directives for social distancing on sets. It mandates the use of cloth face coverings by cast and crew, orders that only “essential cast and crew” be allowed on set, and prescribes that actors should wash their hands before scenes.

Any prolonged physical contact — i.e. fight scenes or sex scenes — is “discouraged,” and actors are mandated to keep “as silent as possible to avoid spreading droplets through talking.” Crowd scenes are also discouraged. Actors and musicians who cannot wear face coverings during performances should keep eight feet apart.

So essentially less is more in terms of people

THR pointed out, “Studio and network execs must rethink their choices, too: Some are looking to their own libraries for contained shows that might be worth rebooting, while others are exploring potential series add-ons where only a couple of characters are needed.”

As of this writing, theaters in California will slowly start to open, including the big chains like Regal, AMC and Cinemark while productions adjust to this new normal.
