As Marvel inches closer to another Avengers event, actors working on the project shared how serious the company is about keeping spoilers from being leaked.

“Media training for DOOMSDAY is they just hold a knife to your neck and said, ‘You say anything and it’s over,’” joked actor Wyatt Russell.

“It’s the most terrifying stunt imaginable, doing a bunch of interviews where they go, ‘So we hear you’re in DOOMSDAY?’” added David Harbour.

While these actors joke about the lengths Marvel goes to combat leaks, there have been actors in the past who have struggled not to share any secrets Marvel has attempted to keep. SPIDER-MAN actor Tom Holland is notorious for accidentally leaking multiple Marvel secrets, including the names of two of the movies and the fact that Marvel planned on making a third SPIDER-MAN movie before the second had even been released.

His ability to keep his lips sealed, however, had gotten better over the years, and he managed to keep the crossover with the previous SPIDER-MAN actors a secret for the third movie in the series, even as many theorized this would be the case. The other actors working on this project also kept it a secret, telling fans that, unfortunately, the rumors were not true.

“I can’t speak for anything else, but for myself. They might be doing something, but I ain’t got a call,” Andrew Garfield said in May of 2021 when asked if he was going to be in the upcoming movie. “I see how often SPIDER-MAN is trending and it’s like people freaking out. And I’m just like, ‘guys, guys, guys’ — I wish I would just be able to speak to everyone and say, ‘I recommend that you chill.’”

As Marvel cranks up its security for AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY, one exciting component of the upcoming movie that has been abundantly clear is that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the franchise, however, this time he will be a villain.

“I can’t say too much about [it], but what is going on there right now is so beyond my expectation of what was possible, that no wonder it was numinous to me,” Downey previously said about his upcoming role as Dr. Doom. “And it’s also the only way that I felt like I can give a certain entertainment seeking audience something that they may have a hankering to have an experience of in a way where I can continue to develop my interest in the future of entertainment.”

As Marvel looks to reclaim its cultural significance that lead to the unprecedented success of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and ENDGAME, it is ramping up its marketing, while hoping to build hype through suspense — and keeping major plot points under wraps.
