TENET’s John David Washington Credits His Parents, Denzel and Pauletta, As His Inspiration

By Allyson Vannatta, Senior Writer

John David Washington revealed to PEOPLE magazine that his parents, Denzel and Paulette Washington, are his inspiration.

“Pauletta Washington gives me inspiration,” John David said. “That’s my mother, the most consistent person in my life.”

As for his Oscar-winning father, he had some special words for him, too.

“I think the best actor in the industry, in the business, is my father,” he said.

“I’m inspired by the kind of career he’s had and what he’s had to do. Again, he’s been on the frontline for many years, and what he’s done with it, with his opportunities, I just am so inspired and continue to be inspired by what he does and how he works and his approach to the craft and the business.”

The star of Christopher Nolan’s TENET, John David also revealed he thinks his father is his “favorite actor.”

The actor has also opened up about the quality time he was able to share with his parents during the pandemic. PEOPLE reported that, last week, John David appeared on JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE!, where Samuel L. Jackson was guest hosting.

“You really live in Brooklyn, but since the pandemic has happened you had to come back home. So you’re living in the house again, right?” asked Jackson.

Although John David isn’t living with his parents anymore, he admitted he was staying in his old room for a time.

Jackson, who starred in AVENGERS: ENDGAME, said that he knew Denzel “likes some order in the house,” so he asked John David if he had he to do chores again while living at home.

“I can’t believe we’re doing this right now,” John David said, laughing. “There was a chore or two. My chore was to make sure I’m down for dinner in time.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Denzel’s “supernatural” moment he had with the Holy Spirit.

“I went to church with Robert Townsend and when it came time to come down to the altar I said, ‘You know this time, I’m just going to go down there and give it up and see what happens.’ I went in the prayer room and gave it up and let go and experienced something I’ve never experienced in my life. I remember calling my mother afterwards and asking her, I said, ‘Well, you know it felt like I was going up in the air, and my cheeks were filled’ and she said, ‘Oh no, that’s the devil you’re purging.’

“It was a supernatural, once-in-this-lifetime experience that I couldn’t completely understand at the time,” he added.
