Why This DUCK DYNASTY Star Helps the Hungry

By Movieguide® Contributor

DUCK DYNASTY’s Miss Kay recently shared a childhood story that set her on the road to helping the hungry.

During a recent episode of the “Unashamed” podcast, Jase Robertson pointed out that his parents had always been very “hospitable,” feeding anyone who came to their home.

“It was my grandmother,” Miss Kay explained. “I mean, she cooked, and I’d say, ‘Why are we cooking? The people that work at the store aren’t coming today.’ And she’d say, ‘Well, we want to have enough for the strangers.’”

She continued, “I didn’t realize until I was a little bit older — we had hobos. I didn’t know who they were. They were standing out in the yard, and she went, gave them a plate of food, and they ate it, gave her back the plate, thanked her and went on.”

Al Robertson emphasized that this mindset of helping others is not as popular today.

“Right now, everybody’s just like, ‘Well, let the government do it,’” he said. “It’s always back to this idea that somehow, you have this Big Nanny State as opposed to people just helping people. As a Christian, it was just like…these people were hungry.”

Al asked, “Wouldn’t it be great if every state government said, ‘Hey guys, we can’t fix this problem, so we’re asking all the churches to rally to help the homeless situation in your state.’ I guarantee you, this thing [would] be solved in a year.”

“I think the church stepping in [is] the answer, family stepping in [is] the answer,” Zach Robertson added. “Jases read a verse a few podcasts ago [that] was talking about how Jesus fed all those people, but He knew a lot of them were coming just to get their fill. I mean, He knew that, but He still did it anyway, because there’s some that you just never know what God’s going to do with them.”

Fans of the podcast were happy to see Miss Kay on the episode, as she has been dealing with an illness that had her hospitalized earlier this year.

“Miss Kay has been in the hospital this month, and both of us can’t wait for her to be back home,” her husband, Phil Robertson, wrote in a March Instagram post. “She’s doing better, and she’s as ready to be out of the rehabilitation facility as I am to have her back with me.”

In another post, Phil wrote, “I’m glad to have Miss Kay back home sleeping beside me where I can squeeze her hand and she can squeeze mine.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the way faith changed Phil and Miss Kay’s marriage:

In a recent interview with CBN News, DUCK DYNASTY’s Phil Robertson and his wife Kay share their thoughts on the upcoming movie THE BLIND, which details their life before knowing Jesus.

“When I saw it the first time, I cried from start to finish because it was just so real and they were doing such a great job…playing us,” Kay shared. “And then it was like reliving the hardest time of your life, and even though you know the end, it’s still hard looking at it…”

Kay shared what her husband was like before coming to Christ.

“He was pretty hard man. Distrusting, he didn’t trust anybody, didn’t trust me, didn’t trust anybody, but it was because he didn’t trust himself,” she said

“I do know that now, but he was very a jealous person and, you know, he just had some ‘devil qualities,’ I call them…I would tell the boys, you know, constantly that that’s the devil in him. He’s a good man, but the devil has got a hold of him,” Kay added.

“I basically was a sinful young man, no doubt about it,” Phil explained, per Movieguide®.

After finding a relationship with Christ, though, Phil’s life transformed.

“If redemption can happen for me, it can happen for any of us. It’s hard for me to see what I once was, but I want you to know there’s hope for us all,” he added, according to Faithwire.
