Marvel’s youngest fleet will make an entry in a new series, CHAMPIONS.

The cast will star some of the same members of THE MARVELS, including Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan and Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, Fiction Horizon reported June 21.

The show’s description reads, “After a devastating event, mysterious teen heroes emerge calling themselves the Young Avengers. But who are these young vigilantes, and what gives them the right to use that name?”

The show was originally going to be called YOUNG AVENGERS, but purportedly, the name was changed due to the cast not being very “young” anymore, and since THE MARVELS didn’t get very good reviews, they wanted to take a fresh route.

In one of THE MARVELS’ final scenes, Kamala recruits Kate to form their own group of Avengers, leading to this series.

Part of Movieguide®’s review for the movie reads, “THE MARVELS does away with some of the more ponderous aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including any heavy-handed political correctness or wokeness…However, THE MARVELS has a smattering of foul language, lots of action violence and two or three other minor issues that warrant caution for younger viewers.”

According to Comic Book Movie, the show will also star Kathryn Newton as Cassie Lang, Joe Locke as Wiccan, Dominique Throne as Ironheart and Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, AKA Miss America. There is no news of Young Avenger Eli Bradley, AKA Patriot, being included. The show hasn’t started production yet, but it is in development.

Nexus Point News reported that Racha Fruchbom will be the series’ writer, showrunner and executive producer, but it’s not officially confirmed. Fruchbom has worked on SHRINKING, FRESH OFF THE BOAT and PARKS AND REC.

Comic Book Movie noted production for CHAMPIONS won’t begin until next year. This means it will likely come out after AVENGERS: SECRET WARS release date in 2027.

AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY is the next Avengers project to hit theaters. It’s the first Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover since ENDGAME in 2019. Filming began in April this year for a May 1, 2026 release date. It’s directed by the Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony Russo, who directed AVENGERS: ENDGAME.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Anthony revealed the teams’ thought-process for how they choose what characters will be in which stories.

“As far as how do we look at who’s in the movies, it’s just a long creative process of exploring where we want to take the story,” Anthony said. “What is the most surprising and exciting area for us to push into, and which characters help us in that effort?”

They say they don’t think much about what’s going on around the world or in the theater landscape when they make movies.

“We can’t control the economic environment. We can’t control what’s happening in the world around the time of the release,” Joe said. “We can’t control the audience’s desire to leave their homes or not. All we can do is make the best movie possible in the hope that it excites them.”

With THE MARVELS’ being a near flop, it’s up in the air whether fans will be excited by CHAMPIONS.
