For actor Cameron Mathison, returning to the site of his house, burned down in the recent LA wildfires, is a “surreal” experience.

“It’s just so surreal,” he told Access Hollywood. “It doesn’t even feel like it’s the same place — the same street, the same block, the same neighborhood. Every time I come up, it just, in a way, gets more and more sad because there’s just less and less living.”

Mathison continued, “This is where my kids were raised. Everything that I’ve ever owned in my life was here, everything that my kids have ever owned was here. We’re a very positive, resilient family, but at the same time, this has been a tough one.”

The actor shared the clip on Instagram, writing, “Coming back to the property where our home burned down in Altadena was extremely emotional — so many memories here. For us and for so many others. Thank you to Access Hollywood for checking in on how we’re doing, what life looks like after this, and how I’ve turned my focus toward building something meaningful out of challenge.”

This summer, Mathison and his family held a ceremony where their house once stood, “saying goodbye to what once was and opening our hearts to what’s ahead,” the actor wrote on Instagram.

“We let go of the past and released it all — making space for what’s to come,” Mathison concluded.

Mathison spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the devastating loss of his family’s home earlier this year, sharing that when they were called to evacuate, he “didn’t really believe” the fires would reach their home.

He only grabbed passports, birth certificates and a few photo albums but “unfortunately left some valuable ones where the kids were very, very young and film that you can’t replace.”

“If I really thought the house was going down, I would’ve grabbed so much more,” Mathison said

He continued, “We spent over a decade doing every detail of that house. It was something that the kids loved, it was where the kids wanted to raise their kids. I keep coming back to that we’re all safe. It’s so devastating and when you’re in shock like this, it’s kinda hard to think clearly, to be honest.”

Mathison and his family are just one of many who lost everything in the Los Angeles wildfires and who are now working towards rebuilding.
