Positive Movies with Christian Values Dominated 2023’s Top 10 Box Office

By Movieguide® Staff

Positive movies with moral, Christian worldviews still draw moviegoers despite the seeming dominance of immoral content produced in Hollywood.

In 2023, 70% of the top 10 movies had strong or very strong Christian, redemptive or morally uplifting content and values, Movieguide®’s Report to the Entertainment Industry found.

THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 held the No. 2 through 4 spots at the domestic box office, while THE LITTLE MERMAID, ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA and SOUND OF FREEDOM took sixth, seventh and ninth respectively.

Alternatively, only 30% of the top 10 exhibited strong or very strong non-Christian, anti-Christian, false or immoral content and values, and none had strong or very strong occult, pagan or false theological worldviews.

Rates of homosexual content, obscenities and profanities, substance abuse, sexual content and violence were also minimal in the top 10 domestic box office winners.

What does this mean for filmmakers?

For movies to impact audiences and garner a bigger box office take, creators should focus on producing stories with moral, Christian worldviews.

2023’s SOUND OF FREEDOM is a prime example of this.

Despite its low budget, the movie beat major franchises, like MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE and TRANSFORMERS, due to its “strong Christian, moral worldview…[and] story about a man who sacrifices his safety and wellbeing to save hundreds of children.”

Movieguide® reported, “It earned $184,177,725, surpassing the TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR ($179,428,838), INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY ($174,480,468) and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE-DEAD RECKONING PART ONE ($172,135,383).”

Movieguide®’s report notes that filmmakers are “twice to four times more likely to reach the Top 10 or Top 25 at the Domestic Box Office” if they eliminate non- or anti-Christian, immoral themes from their movies.

As moviemakers consider what content they want to produce, Movieguide®’s report shows that family-friendly, moral and uplifting movies will always succeed.
