Sometimes, faith-based movies release a devotional complement to their project on YouVersion, the most popular and free Bible app. To help you plug in to these great resources, here’s a list of seven movies that encourage Bible readers to go deeper into the word of God.

GOD’S NOT DEAD: A LIGHT IN DARKNESS is the third installment in the GOD’S NOT DEAD movie franchise and follows Pastor Dave (David A.R. White) as he fights to retain his church building from the school. GOD’S NOT DEAD: A LIGHT IN DARKNESS is well made with great acting and exciting moments. The movie has a strong, inspiring Christian message of responding to hate with the love of Jesus Christ.

SAMSON is biblical drama about Samson, the man with God-given supernatural strength. Samson is supposed to use his strength to defeat the Philistines who harshly ruled over the Hebrew people in Israel. Though the production values falter at times, SAMSON has some thrilling moments and a very strong Christian biblical worldview that honors the One True God of Israel. However, caution is advised for some intense violence.

THE STAR is a wonderful, hilarious, deeply reverential animated family movie centered around the birth of Jesus, but from the perspective of a lowly donkey named Bo. THE STAR is tremendous fun, with great moral, spiritual lessons along the way. It’s a must-see Christmas movie for every family.

THE CASE FOR CHRIST is the true story of how Chicago Tribune journalist Lee Strobel. An avowed atheist, Strobel sets out to disprove Christianity when his wife, Leslie, accepts Christ. THE CASE FOR CHRIST is a terrific drama reminiscent of ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN, with its own examples of excellent acting. It also brilliantly lays out the facts confirming Jesus Christ’s resurrection, but does contain some tense moments and alcohol use requiring caution for younger children.

  1. BEN- HUR (2016)

BEN-HUR is a remake of the beloved 1959 classic starring Charlton Heston. The newer movie stars Jack Huston as the Jewish prince who runs afoul of his Roman friend. Adventure ensues as Ben-Hur gets sentenced to a slave ship and must forsake his lust for revenge after meeting Jesus Christ and his disciples, who preach forgiveness. BEN-HUR makes your heart race, especially the sea battle and the chariot race. However, it turns the Gospel message of salvation into a lesson about forgiveness.

  1. RISEN

RISEN is about a Roman soldier and unbeliever who is on the hunt for Christ’s body that disappeared from the tomb. The soldier doesn’t know that Christ is, well, risen, and the body cannot be found. RISEN somewhat feels like a sequel to Mel Gibson’s THE PASSION, as this movie also has war violence and killing. RISEN also presents a powerful Christian, biblical worldview that promotes the reality of Jesus Christ’s physical resurrection.
